Banner grommet and hem spacing guide
Grommet placement isn't cosmetic. Too few grommets, or grommets spaced too far apart, and wind load concentrates on the ones you have until they tear out. This is the spacing chart and hem spec we use as the baseline for every vinyl and mesh banner.
The standard rule
Grommets go in all four corners first, then every 2 feet along the edges between corners. Larger or higher-wind installs tighten that to every 1–2 feet for added support.

On a short side under 2 ft (like the 2 ft ends of a 2' x 20' banner), corner grommets alone are standard — there's no room between corners to add more without them overlapping.
Grommet spec
- Size: #2 grommets (3/8" inside diameter) for most vinyl and mesh banners — the industry-standard size for outdoor use
- Material: brass or nickel-plated for outdoor durability; satin nickel, white, or black available for indoor/display use where finish matters
- Offset from edge: centered 3/4" in from each edge, inside the hem
Hem spec
- Hem width: 1" folded edge on all four sides is standard
- Method: heat-welded for outdoor and heavy-duty banners (no stitch holes, fully weatherproof); sewn or taped for lighter-duty and indoor use
- Why it matters: the hem gives each grommet a double-thick layer of material to grip, so grommets set into a hemmed edge hold significantly longer under tension than grommets set into a single layer
- Reinforced hems: for large-format banners (10 ft+) or high-wind installs, ask for webbing reinforcement inside the hem — it distributes load across the full edge instead of concentrating it at each grommet
Material-specific notes
- Vinyl: standard grommet + hem spec above applies directly. On oversized solid vinyl in open wind, ask about wind slits or switch to mesh instead.
- Mesh: perforation already relieves wind load, so mesh can often run on standard 2 ft spacing even where solid vinyl would need tighter spacing or slits.
- Fabric: lighter material can run fewer grommets than vinyl at the same size, but reinforced corners are worth requesting if the banner will be hung repeatedly rather than laid flat for a photo backdrop.
Mounting hardware that pairs with each grommet
- Zip ties: one per grommet, two at each corner for outdoor installs
- Bungee cords / bungee balls: better than zip ties where the banner needs to flex in wind without tearing at the hole
- Rope leaders: for pole-to-pole or fence-line hanging over a longer span
- Pole pockets: an alternative to grommets entirely — a sewn sleeve at the top (and sometimes bottom) that a rod slides through, common for street pole banners
Before you finalize your spec
Grommet spacing solves how the banner survives its mount. It doesn't solve whether anyone can read it once it's up — that's a function of letter height versus viewing distance, not hardware.
